The Australian Shepherd is not an “Aussie” at all but was bred in the United States by Basque shepherds who emigrated from Australia. Useful as a farm dog and as a tracker, the Australian Shepherd also makes an outstanding pet with its good nature and intelligence.

 

The coat of this breed is thick and wavy and uniquely colored with any variety of red, black, or blue merle as well as white, tan, or black markings. Their tail is bushy and hangs straight down although they are commonly born with a bob tail or have them docked as a puppy. Their ears are high set, triangular in shape, and break over and drop when at full alert. They are a heavy shedder and require regular brushing.

 

The “Aussie”, as they are sometimes called, is a medium-sized, firm, and muscular dog with boundless energy. Their height ranges from 18-23 inches and their weight is approximately 40-64 pounds.

 

The temperament of the Aussie is intelligent, even-tempered, loyal, and naturally protective. They are eager to please and highly trainable and are great with children. Highly energetic, they need lots of exercise and will quickly become bored and destructive if not allowed room to run. They make great watchdogs, barking ferociously at strangers approaching their turf. The Aussie has many excellent qualities but is a brainy breed that requires early consistent training.
