Bichon Frise

A smart, happy, and outgoing little dog, the Bichon Frise is a popular house dog and family pet. This breed is known for its dark sparkling eyes, snow-white coat, and baby doll face as well as its good-natured disposition.

The Bichon may have originated in the Mediterranean from the French Water Dog and the Poodle. Traders allegedly transported the breed to France and other parts of Europe where it soon became a favorite of nobility. It makes one wonder how many traders were easily fleeced of their trading wares when they encountered the attractive, perky little dog. Today Bichons are primarily companion dogs and are used in obedience and agility trials as well as therapy dogs.

The Bichon has a white somewhat coarse topcoat and a soft dense undercoat. It is non-shedding so it is a good candidate for allergy sufferers. The dark eyes and black nose stand in contrast to its white coat giving it an endearing and slightly mischievous look. Grooming is necessary and can be a challenge for the inexperienced groomer.

Weighing up to 16 pounds and measuring up to 11 inches at the shoulder, the Bichon is a small sized dog but quite hardy in spite of its diminutive stature. It has a life span typically exceeding 12 years and it is generally healthy and not prone to many genetic problems.

Although they are small in size, the Bichon Frise is an active dog and requires exercise. It is highly trainable and aims to please its master. They generally need lots of company and will suffer separation anxiety if left alone for an extended period of time.
