What's a red labrador?

Fox red labradors, sometimes called red fox labradors, aren't much different than a black lab, chocolate lab or silver lab. Some people believe that the only way to develop a fox red labrador is to cross a lab with a Weimaraner. That's not so. In fact, according to the American Kennel Club or Kennel Club the only thing different is their coloring, which is actually yellow. The red coloring is a recessive trait that comes from pheomelanin. That is a fancy word for pigment. It's actually yellow. It just looks red. Historically, all labradors began as black labradors. The colors have changed due to selective breeding. Red fox labradors were once out of fashion but now they are resurging in popularity.

Will your fox red labrador retriever be a good choice for a gun dog?

Much like any color labrador, your red fox labrador puppy can make a good gun dog with proper training. Your puppy will need to learn basic obedience. You'll need expose your red fox lab puppy to different environments. You may find it useful to crate train your puppy before beginning gun training.This works best when you begin on the first day your puppy comes home. It's also important to socialize your puppy, and make sure you give it the chance to smell timber and brush so it becomes farmiliar with the hunting environment. It's also wise to expose your fox red labrador to water because it may need to retrieve your game in wet areas.

Will your red fox labrador puppy grow darker as it gets older?

The color tends to darken over time. As a result your full grown red fox labrador may be much darker than when it was a puppy.
