Comment: I went here with my mom and older sister and has a wonderful experience. As a kid with celiac I can proudly say their gluten free donuts were the BEST I have ever had in my life. Not only was the food great, the staff were also so warm and welcoming and you can tell how much they value their costumers feedback and satisfaction. Dave is absolutely AMAZING and hes my new favorite person I will never forget him. Love, the redheaded girl with pigtail braids. ❤️🍩❤️

Comment: Some of the best gluten free donuts I’ve ever had! Certainly the freshest too. They were even able to make more when the people in front of us ordered the last ones of the kinds we wanted.Truly amazing customer service! The owner is extremely personable and makes you feel right at home. Would definitely recommend- especially if you’re celiac/gf and don’t normally get to enjoy donuts!

Comment: I’m from SC. I wanted to surf fish while here and brought a rod/reel with me on the plane. I’m here for 5 days total. On day 1 I wanted to try a local doughnut. I saw they had gluten free. I don’t need it but my kids do. I bought some from a dude in a flannel shirt. I thought it weird, but it’s California so whatever. I got them back to the place we were staying and we all sampled about six different doughnuts. 🤯 OH MY GOODNESS!!!!! I’m a Krispy Kreme lifer but DANG THESE ARE GOOD. Today I went back and bought 6 more. These are expensive so there went my fishing budget but it’s worth it because my kids and enlaws loved it. My father enlaw said the maple bacon should be illegal it’s so good. Listen there are a lot of choices here but if you are going to try just 1 or several this should be your first stop and if like me it will be the only one you need. I’m not big on California, sorry, but the only thing better than the weather and scenery are these incredible doughnuts. 🤯

Comment: UPDATE: They make an outstanding donut, and their customer service is extraordinary. Upon reading my review(below) and discovering that a mistake was made, they went above and beyond to make it right. I will be a lifelong devoted customer, which says a lot considering Im not generally a big donut fan. This place has earned it’s Best in California title.(this was my original review which was immediately responded to and resolved by the owners) Well, I drove 30 minutes to surprise my husband on Fathers Day. I hate to give the service a low score because they were very nice, but they left out part of our order. I know they were busy, but I’m pretty sure I paid for what was left out. I got home 30 minutes later after standing in that long line to find that I did not have all that I waited so long to get. It was my first time here and Im pretty bummed.

Comment: Wanted to see for myself if this truly was the best donut in California as had been declared by a foodie magazine. The donuts while pricey are certainly well worth the added costs for quality ingredients and deliciousness. The long lines attest to the popularity of this donut house. The service though was somewhat lacking and downright rude and argumentative. After standing in line to order, I was told there would be an approximate five minute wait for my fresh out of the fryer hand made donut before it would be ready, which was absolutely no problem whatsoever. So I simply decided to order a coffee to enjoy while I waited. Now the strange part occurred, as two or three other customers who were BEHIND ME IN LINE were rung up and sent on their merry way while I was left standing like an invisible ghost at the register. When I finally asked the worker behind the counter if I could order my coffee, she said, Im sorry but we only serve people in order and youll have to go to the back of the line. When I told her, I agree with you lets serve people in order because the last two or three people were BEHIND ME IN LINE and all I want is to be served next like you said. She then proceeded to try and wait on another person BEHIND ME when I had to step between them and the counter (which was easy because I was already in front of them and closer to the counter being NEXT in line) when she finally decided to get me my coffee. Serendipitously, while this commotion was all taking place my donut that I had been waiting for was done and I got to take it with my coffee. Dave, one of the co-owners came out to apologize for his staffs poor customer service and said he was going to use it as a teaching moment, and incorporate better service techniques for his counter personnel. Hopefully the additional training takes place because the rudeness left a somewhat bitter taste in my mouth.

Comment: So Im a big donut fan and I have very high standards. I think in general that most donut places are more concerned with making donuts fast, then the actual quality of the donut. This place is not that at all. The flavor profiles are amazing. Ive tried 3 or 4 different flavors now and theyre all great. I think the bananas foster is my favorite at this point but I intend to try every flavor just to make sure. The staff is always great too. Ive come on different days and different times but the welcome and service is exactly the same each time. I wish they were open 7 days a week but thats just me being selfish lol. Cant wait to come back again. Update several months later Ive now tried over 20 different flavors and theyre all great. THIS IS THE BEST DONUT PLACE EVER.

Comment: As a vegan and someone that can’t eat gluten too I was very happy to have two options to try from.I tried the maple gluten free vegan donut and it was fantastic. I don’t live in the US so it was great to find a place that caters to people with lots of restrictions like me.Before we left one of the employees brought me a free donut to try which was very generous. Comment: We came for the gluten friendly donuts and left completely satisfied. We tried each of the GF flavors and the maple vegan, all were excellent! The donuts are more like actual donuts than other GF donuts that we’ve tried. These made all 5 of us happy, so happy we are driving back for another round today. Also noted - this is GF in a Gluten Friendly atmosphere because they cannot 100% say there is no cross contamination because it’s a bakery with flour in the air. They do have a dedicated fryer and change tongs etc. 4 in our group are gluten sensitive and 1 is celiac. Nobody got sick 🙌🏻

Comment: So far this is the best artisanal donut shop Ive tried in south OC.Raised Donuts:The only knock (other than having to pay artisanal donut prices) during my experience was that the Chocolate Raised was a bit dense and stale for my taste. I did get the Vanilla Bean (raised) too and that one was fantastic -- so Im going assume the Chocolate was just a bad/sitting batch. The Dutch Apple Pie and Blackberry Fritter (great option if you want a tart bite) also had perfect texture/chew to the dough.Cake Donuts:The standouts for me are the Brown Butter Sea Salt, Boysenberry, and Pumpkin Spice (gluten-friendly options are available for all three). The Raspberry Corn Cake was like a cornbread donut with a crispy exterior to the dough, but the raspberry ganache falls flat compared to how great their boysenberry ganache is. Their Old Fashioned also vanishes when compared next to their Brown Butter Sea Salt. Which, if I had pick only one flavor, it would be that Brown Butter Sea Salt.

Well, I havent tried #1 or #2 yet but these were the best donuts Ive ever eaten. Incredible taste, perfect texture on each of the many we tried. Flat out INCREDIBLE!! I love a good donut so have tried many and I was delighted to see a top five shop in the same shopping center as my fav Mexican lunch place for when Im heading to San Diego. The Universe was smiling. Excellent service from kind people. I understand why others trek down from LA just to have these donuts. Ill be back and soon!! PS My video shows some empty space in the display. Comment: Is it overpriced? From an average guys standpoint who’s not used to paying more than $5 for a doughnut, yes. Very simple maple glaze and an Apple fritter set me back just slightly under $10. Add coffee it’ll be over $10.But the texture of their doughnut was something very special that I haven’t had anything like that before. Maple glaze had a very sharp sweetness level to it and it was just perfect. Apple fritter was nothing much to write home about, but very high quality. Would I go back? Hell yeah, for the maple glaze though.

It was located in a strip mall. When we arrived, the tables outside were filled with customers! The staff was friendly and super knowledgeable with their gluten free products. We chose the GF browned butter sea salt and GF apple cider donuts. They were warm, soft, moist, freaking delicious! We hope they keep checking prices to open shop in Meridian :)

My favorite are the Browned Butter and Apple Fritter.My husband eats gluten and he has had 5 flavors. His favorite is the Black Forest!They are more dense than other donuts. So, dont expect a light texture (get those at the donut place by Albertsons in Dana Point off Stonehill)!The staff lady seemed to still want to serve us with boxes, even after we advised her that we were Dining In. She also tried to get us to buy another donut so we could get the big, pretty box, which made me nervous, because I had already notified her that I have a gluten allergy (celiac) and my food needs to be separated from my husbands food.So, Id just recommend that the staff listen more carefully, and abandon upselling when someone has food allergies.

Comment: I don’t even like donuts that much and I can’t stay away from this place. I spent a month away from so cal and thought about these donuts every single day.I am told the regular donuts are great but i avoid gluten so I can only comment on the gluten free ones. (There is a chance for cross contamination in the kitchen but fyi they use a dedicated gluten free fryer.) usually gluten free baked goods are very dense or even gummy. Through some kind of sorcery these are hearty like a cake donut usually is but also light. I have tried every flavor and my favorites are maple (again, not even a maple person), chocolate, and brown butter sea salt. I literally do not miss the wheat version when I have the gluten free ones.They also have gluten free vegan donuts. These are slightly more dense but still great. I particularly appreciate that all the gluten free and gluten free vegan flavors are treated with the same creativity and care, so they don’t feel like an afterthought.

What stood out to me was that from the moment we walked through the door, the whole JD Flannel team threw genuine smiles and hellos our way. They were ready and waiting for our order. We felt like valued customers.In contrast, I was at Nékter yesterday and not one of the three people working there could bother to look up from what they were doing to say, “hi,” or take my order. There are lots of really good donut 4 star donut shops in America. However the level of freshness, whole real ingredients, and flavors hits a new level. They also have a variety of GF & Vegan donuts. Their Brown Butter Sea Salt is so unique. Their cake is moist but fluffy, full of flavor, not just a carrier for the toppings. The chocolate icing melts in your mouth. No feeling of fat lining your mouth or a lump in your stomach. They rotate their flavors to always give you something new to look forward to. The Gluten-free donuts were in the same box with the Vegan donuts but separated in a bag - very thoughtful! The branding outside the box was as cute as its blue and white gingham interior. One donut is $4 but the quality is definantly worth it. I got the Vanilla Latte. I usually add lots of sugar and cream to my coffees. But there was no need to with this one. The sprinkle birthday cake donut was magically fluffy - like amazingly light and fluffy. Bacon donut was covered in bacon. Smoked apple fritter, so so good! And the coconut caramel donut, also delicious. As others have mentioned, staff was kind and helpful. Also I saw a few complaints about price... Yes, their donuts are more expensive than a standard buy by the dozen donut shop, but seriously were only talking a couple bucks. If you want cheap, super sweet, gross, bulk donuts, then probably not the place for you. But if you want superb tasty donuts, I highly recommend them. We will definitely be back!

Comment: Wow, I just discovered this place! I live in San Clemente, next to zero good donut places and wanted to give my son a treat on the way to school. I was really on the way to Krispy Crème when I decided to make this last minute detour... so glad I did! Im not into the gourmet donuts, but they have an amazing Boysenberry Glaze Donut and the best Old Fashion Glazed Ive ever had. We will be making this place our only donut place from now on.

We have visited this store since the day that it opened. Every visit has been a complete highlight to our day. We enjoy seeing Dave’s (one of the owners) big smile greet us as we enter the store. His kind & southern type hospitality as he takes the time to chat with his customers & even knows most by name!The staff is always kind, patient, & happy. I’ll be honest that I’m not much of a donut fan, but man are these donuts DELICIOUS! They are always fresh, good quality ingredients, & everything homemade! The jams/compotes are devine! They have a donut for everyone, vegan & gluten free. Let me tell you that I’ve tried those options & I’m blown away that they taste just like the regular donuts. The coffee is a perfect pair with the sweetness of the donuts. Unfortunately we will be moving to TN & will truly miss visiting this place. Hopefully if you guys expand some day, you will think of opening a store in TN :) Thank you for opening your doors and sharing your donuts with us.

Comment: A high end donut shop that won’t disappoint. Delicious dough with a sour hint & lots of yummy flavours. The maple bacon was pretty special! Brown sugar one is super sweet if you need a sugar hit & the apple fritter was great, not to mention the smiley staff and JD himself giving me more of an energy boost than the donuts! Not only were the donuts incredible, but we also loved that my daughter who has nut allergies could safely eat here, as the only donuts with nuts are the vegan ones (cashew). Comment: Best donuts and service in Orange County. As an out-of-towner, anytime I’m within 30 minutes I make a detour to stop by JD’s. The blueberry lemon donut is definitely in my top 10 donuts of all-time. As someone who usually leans towards the yeast donuts, I actually strongly prefer all of their cake donuts here, but your really can’t go wrong with any of them. The owner greeted us and everyone in the shop treated us like we were long time friends. The coffee here is simple, but tastes great. It was a nice compliment to the sweetness of the donuts. Comment: I wanted to try a Boston Cream, which was on the December menu, but they were out of those. Its not on the January menu, so Im out of luck for at least another 30 days. Do you see where Im going with this? I have problems with a business that does business on their terms. Both times Ive stopped by, the place was overrun with pretentious mothers and their unchained children. The first time, I stopped by, a little boy was holding the door so his little sister couldnt go inside, which means no one else could either. The mom said and did nothing, no representative from JD Flannel said or did anything. so I left. The next two times (and today, the last) I could get in, but no one disciplines their children, so its not a pleasant experience. Clearly, this is not a place for people who want to relax on a Saturday or Sunday morning and grab a morning treat since theres no guarantee or consistency of what treat a person can get, and ill-behaved children and inattentive mothers ruin the whole experience.

My heart sank when I walked in on my last visit and the lady in front of me bought the last (hello, that was mine) apple fritter. To my joy out comes a tray of brand spanking new fritters! Comment: Definitely a five star shop. You cant fault them for selling out and having a small selection..... Just get there early! Smoked apple fritter is amazing with the texture of a donut but the taste of a fritter (crispy fritter lovers might be disappointed... But Im not). Have tried a ton of other flavors, but the vanilla bean is surprisingly a favorite. Plain goodness. Tip... Eat them while hot. The glaze flakes off after the donut cools.Great to have the owners in the shop and chatting people up. They care about their customers and are excited to get feedback. Its not a well oiled machine, yet and Id possibly revise to a four star if it was a shop that had been in business longer than a month or so. Be prepared for a wait. Its worth it.
