Golden retrievers are heavy shedders, especially in the fall and spring. They require daily brushing, and you'll still find hair everywhere. That's because they have a double coat. The top part is oily so it's waterproof. The undercoat is thick and downy. The undercoat adapts to the dog's environment. It grows in thicker when it's colder and sheds during warmer months. Daily brushing is recommended, and weekly undercoat rakings are helpful. Avoid shaving your Golden Retriever. It can cause heat stroke in warm weather as well as sunburn. Besides, the hair may not grow back correctly. Instead, brush daily, rake the undercoat out weekly and get a professional grooming done once every 8 to 10 weeks.

Golden Retriever Haircut:

Never shave a Golden. Instead, use an undercoat rake, twice a week, year round. Check the dog for lumps and hot spots. Then trim the feathery part of dog's coat with symmetry and balance in mind. Make sure the dog has thick hair on the neck, with the rest of the body even and smooth. Use thinning sheers on the ears, and straight scissors to trim the feet and hock. Young puppies shouldn't need trimming.
